From Our Faith Director
Dear Brother Knights,
The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, nations always progress through the following sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to selfishness;
From selfishness to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependency;
From dependence back to into bondage.
This sequence was one of the topics of discussion at the retreat for clergy, prior to the 2023 Chrism Mass. As I reviewed the sequence, I find that the United States has outlived the life expectancy of a great nation considering its independence in 1776. Where in this list are we today? Are we in the selfishness to complacence level? Are we at the stage where we do not really care about our neighbors and God. Our currency reads,” In God We Trust”, but do we really?
In my opinion, The Knights of Columbus has slowed the sequence in an attempt to bring the nation back to “Spiritual Faith”. The Knights of Columbus was instrumental in adding the words “Under God” to our national Anthem. An anthem, I as a child would recite every morning before school be-gan, in our classroom. That was a long time ago. We have so much work ahead of us as Knights to bring “In God We Trust” into the forefront of our nation. God needs to be invited back to our school, to the state and federal buildings as well. The Knights of Columbus 4th degree need to con-tinue emphasizing patriotism to show the country and the world that we as Catholics, care. We are first and foremost Catholic and through the Knights of Columbus we, as an organization, can re-verse the sequence and return once again back to spiritual faith.
Please pray for our priests, deacons and religious during this Easter season.
