Advent. In Expectation with Mary

  • Name: The name comes from the Latin word gaudete, which means "rejoice". The day's opening words are the introit antiphon, "Rejoice (Gaudete) in the Lord always".
  • Focus: The focus shifts from "The Lord is coming" to "The Lord is near".
  • Readings: Readings focus on rejoicing in the Lord, the mission of St. John the Baptist, and admonitions to pray without ceasing, give thanks, and do not quench the Spirit.
  • Advent wreath: A rose-colored candle is lit around the Christ Candle in the Advent wreath.
  • Tone: The tone is lighter and more joyous than the traditional Advent observance.
  • Traditions: Traditions date back to the fourth or fifth century.
