Who Is Our Lady of Mount Carmel?

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a title given to the Virgin Mary, closely associated with the Carmelite Order, which originated on Mount Carmel in present-day Israel. This devotion is rooted in the spiritual legacy of the Prophet Elijah, who lived and prayed on Mount Carmel and inspired early Christian hermits to settle there.

Origins and Devotion

  • These hermits built a chapel dedicated to Mary, marking the beginning of Marian devotion under this title.
  • Over time, this group evolved into the Carmelite Order, which spread across Europe.
  • Mary became known as the patroness and protector of the Carmelites.

The Brown Scapular

A key moment in this devotion is the apparition to St. Simon Stock, an English Carmelite in the 13th century. According to tradition, Mary appeared to him and gave him the Brown Scapular, a small garment symbolizing her protection and a call to live a life of faith and prayer.

  • Those who wear the scapular with devotion are promised spiritual benefits, including protection from eternal damnation.

Feast Day and Legacy

  • The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on July 16.
  • She is also the patroness of Chile, and her image is venerated in many countries.
  • The hymn "Flos Carmeli" ("Flower of Carmel") is traditionally associated with her.
